|
Mrs. Fanny Law, Director of Education presenting awards to the winning team |
ThinkQuest Internet Challenge, originated in the USA, is a highly acclaimed international web design competition aimed at integrating technology in education. It is for teams of 2-3 students aged 12-19 from diverse background and distant points to use their creative, technical and intellectual capacities to develop web-based educational content. This year, more than 6,700 students from around the world participated with only 79 students forming 24 teams made it to the expense-free weekend-long Final Award Weekend which took place on November 19-22 in Los Angeles. | With 109 Hong Kong students (46 from DGS) from 26 schools participated, 20 (12 from DGS) made it to semi-final and 9 (3 from DGS) were awarded with Honorable Mention status. | |

Two DGS girls joined with an Indian student, with Mr. Thomas Man (DGS biology teacher) as their coach, made it to final and won Silver Award in the Sports and Health Category. Each of these students was awarded US$5,000 scholarship with US$1000 cash award to the school and the coach. |

Hong Kong Cyber Campus, the local organizer of ThinkQuest, organized a local award ceremony on January 20, 2000 to recognize the distinctive achievements of the Hong Kong students. Director of Education, Mrs. Fanny Law, JP, Chairman of Quality Education Fund Steering Committee, Mr. Irving Koo and Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Arthur Li presented awards to the students. DGS was also awarded as the school sending out the most participants from Hong Kong. ThinkQuest® is now the most heavily trafficked educational destination on the Internet with an estimated 20 million hits per week. All completed entries of ThinkQuest® will become a permanent member of the ThinkQuest Library (http://thinkquest.org/library/). It now contains over 3,000 web sites on wide ranges of topics. It is indeed a global educational resource building effort and DGS is certainly a part of it. For the coming year, ThinkQuest 2000 will host its Annual Award weekend in Cairo, Egypt. Let us keep our fingers cross for our girls at DGS and hope that they will attain remarkable results and free trips to Cairo!! |
