Report on "Latest Beauty Secrets" - September 23, 2004

The event was held at the Hong Kong Bankers Club and was well attended by 57 members and guests. Our speaker, a world-renowned dermatologist who has published over 170 articles, Dr. Henry Hin Lee Chan, wasted no time in revealing to us the latest trends and technology for facial skin rejuvenation.

One of the recent methods that Dr. Chan explained was the use of radiofrequency to heat up the entire area of the skin. In the coming years Dr. Chan foresees that this technology will also be very effective for burning body fat. Compared with using laser, the depth of heat diffusion is much greater and this method is now fully USFDA approved. From the slides shown, the audience saw much visible skin tightening improvement results from the surgery using radiofrequency. Another area of use for this technology would be to treat serious acne problems.

The second method introduced was the use of LED (light emitting diode) and one of the techniques was photomodulation - the use of light source - to switch off cells that cause the breakdown of collagen in our skin.

As Dr. Chan went on to explain, fractional resurfacing, apparently the latest findings in the field of dermatology for facial skin rejuvenation, has been found to be able to improve youthful appearance by more than five years. Selective photothermolysis can be used to remove pigmentation on the face such as freckles, and based on further hypothesis, fractional photothermolysis is now implemented causing only micro volumes of thermal injury. Fraxel laser treatment was also seen to improve the appearance of fine lines.

The seminar ended with several floor questions as members eagerly took the opportunity to consult Dr. Chan about the general concerns for the various technology introduced and for various methods to improve and protect our skin. Overall the audience gained a well understanding of the topic and took home some of the latest and hottest beauty secrets for women!
