The event took place at the Hong Kong Club and was well attended by 52 members. Dr. Lillian Y.Y. Ko, M.B.B.S. (HK), D.C.H. (London), M.R.C.P. (UK), F.R.C.P. (Edin), F.H.K.A.M. (Paediatrics), Consultant Paediatrician in private practice, Consultant-in-charge of the Hong Kong Child Development Centre, Chairlady of the Hong Kong Society for Child Health and Development, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Society of Clinical Metal Toxicology, member of DOGA Ltd, took the stage to give a very clear and informative talk on the topic of her recent findings of mercury in our diet and her views of its long-term health effects. Attendees were first given an introduction on the sources of mercury found in our daily lives and diet, the signs and symptoms and the dangers of excessive mercury in our system, and the effects of high-level mercury on human developing tissues. Dr. Ko then presented several disturbing global research findings such as infertility related to seafood and mercury intake, a significant correlation between high mercury level and autism in children, and other chronic problems experienced by children with high mercury levels. Dr. Ko also shared some of her experience and her case studies of young children with severe problems related to high mercury levels as a result of over-consumption of seafood in their daily diet. The good news was that significant health improvement was seen in her patients after a series of carefully controlled detoxification treatments. Dr. Ko stressed that she did not come to advise us not to eat seafood, but to pay careful attention to our diet and intake of mercury. Floor questions were raised by many eager attendees wanting to learn more about the subject and the necessary precautions to take when selecting their diet. Overall this seminar was very well received and everyone enjoyed learning about Dr. Ko's research and views on this topic. |
