DOGA Annual Dinner 1998

The DOGA annual dinner took place on the 27th November, 1998 at the City Hall Chinese Restaurant, coinciding with Speech Day, which was also held on the same day. We had great pleasure in inviting Dr. Symons as our guest of honour for the dinner. Dr. Symons had just been to Shanghai and was staying in Hong Kong for about two weeks before returning to England.

The dinner started at around 8:30 p.m. with a brief opening welcome by Dr. Vivian Wong, the President of DOGA, even though many people arrived as early as 7:00 p.m. as it was a good chance for many to catch up on old times. There were 26 tables in all and people were seated according to their year of graduation. Needless to say, the more "senior" members were seated at the head table. The Senior School Headmistress, Mrs. Elim Lau, the Junior School Headmistress, Mrs. Rebecca Yip and the Junior School Headmistress designate, Mrs. Emily Dai were also present.

We began the evening with the distribution of some mystery prizes which were generously donated by the DOGA Committee members. After a couple of courses, we had a musical interlude provided by the Junior School String Quartet and also a solo Gu Zheng performance by students from the Senior School. After a couple more courses, we invited Dr. Symons onto the stage to present her with a birthday cake, generously donated by the Class of 84 - Dr. Symons mentioned that this was the third time that she had celebrated her birthday, even though she was still very happy to cut the cake which had been specially commissioned with the DGS blue color on it. We then proceeded to launch the DOGA website. This project was spear-headed by the Communications Committee of DOGA, but would not have been possible without the help of Sheila Chatjaval, Sandra Khoo (who was responsible for the design and layout of the website in San Francisco) and Helen Wong, who was instrumental in getting the site launched. After the lucky draw where we had many valuable prizes donated by old girls of which the top prize was a diamond ring, the dinner ended officially at around 10:00 p.m. This was immediately followed by a group photograph session with Dr. Symons. If you missed the dinner and would like to obtain copies of the photographs, please could you contact Jane Ng at 2974-7000.

Many thanks to Dr. Wong and to all committee members who helped to make this event a success.
